In the older development the rails were laid straight upon the iron of the yokes, steel wedges and shims being used under them for the ultimate alinement of the rails. TRAMWAY, a monitor or line of rails laid down in the general public roads or streets (hence the American equivalent "street railway"), along which wheeled autos are run for the conveyance of passengers (and occasionally of products) by animal or mechanical power; also a gentle roughly laid railway used for transporting coals, each underground and on the floor, and for different similar purposes. The groove, which was designed for wheel flanges similar to these employed on railways, proved dangerous to the sunshine, slim-tired autos of the American kind. A groove collects ice and dirt, and on curves binds the wheel flanges, increasing the resistance to traction. With this part the wheel flange forces out the dirt clear of the tread. On 10 June 1858 the fleet sailed for mid-Atlantic (Bright's plan was now adopted), but again failure ensued, and the ships returned to Plymouth ; though one part of the directors was able to abandon the whole scheme, it was finally determined to make one additional try.

In a couple of days the whole of the capital was subscribed, and Bright (on the age of twenty-four) was appointed engineer-in-chief to the company, and Whitehouse electrician. The massive variety of rail sections designed a few years ago gave appreciable hassle to makers of rails. Electric tramways in Great Britain are largely equipped on the overhead trolley system, although the conduit and the surface contact programs have been installed in a number of instances. R. Newall & Co. Unfortunately the dimensions of the conductor had been decided before Bright's appointment ; he vainly endeavoured to have it elevated. Old Swedish tråm, trum, which have that sense. On the previous horse cars a straight sort of stairway was used. 81/2 in. Tramways of this sort had been laid at Birkenhead in 1860, at London in 1861, and within the Potteries (North Staffordshire) in 1863. The English public, however, wouldn't tolerate the danger and obstruction brought on by the step-rail, with its large space of slippery iron surface, and the tramway laid in London had to be eliminated, whereas these at Birkenhead and the Potteries were only saved by being relaid with grooved rails.
On a tramway labored on the overhead principle present is supplied to the cars by two overhead conductors or wires. The merits of the girder rail quickly precipitated it to be generally adopted, and although the design has been tremendously improved it remains to-day the standard type of tramway rail used throughout the world. Thus, while the step-rail became the standard type used within the United States, the grooved-rail became typically adopted in Europe. Niagara. Bright was anxious to start in the midst of the Atlantic (the plan ultimately adopted), every ship laying while she steamed - the one to Ireland and the other to Newfoundland - after splicing the two ends together; however he was overruled, and it was determined to start the laying from the Irish coast. The 2 companies worked fairly independently of each other, and on account of this the cable could not be tested electrically as a whole size till it was within the cable tanks of the ships employed in laying it ; again, one firm adopted a left-handed lay for the iron wire sheathing, and the other a proper-handed. Wood should not be used unless the entire width of the carriage-method is paved.
With the second and third Atlantic cables of 1866 and 1866 Bright was himself indirectly involved. The fleet once more sailed for the rendezvous in mid- Atlantic on 17 July. To Bright subsequently belongs the distinction of laying the first Atlantic cable and of first establishing telegraphic communication between Europe and America. The cable fleet assembled at Valencia on four Aug. 1857. The shore finish was landed on 5 Aug. Bright was on the Niagara and Professor Thomson on the Agamemnon. The Niagara laid 1,030, what is electric cable the Agamemnon 1,020 miles of cable. Statistics.-Every year the British board of commerce issues a return of street and street tramways and gentle railways authorized by act or order, showing the amount of capital authorized, paid up and expended; the size of line authorized and the size open for public site visitors; the gross receipts, working expenditures, internet receipts and appropriation of internet receipts; the number of passengers conveyed; the variety of miles run by automobiles and the amount of electrical power used; together with the number of horses, engines and vehicles in use.
